This session sets the stage for your Botany class, reminds you to look carefully at your course syllabus and schedule and briefly introduces you to the Science of Botany.
At the end of this session the successful student will
Carefully read your course syllabus. Do you have the Textbook and Lab Manual? If not, plan how to get them NOW. Look at the grading scale. How will your learning be measured in this course?
Carefully read your course schedule. Note the things that are to be done and when they are due. You will need to spend 7 to 12 hours a week on this course. Think about your personal schedule for all the activates you plan to do. When do you plan to read your botany textbook? When will come to class? When will you study and prepare for quizzes and exams? When will you take the exams? If you plan for your success in this course, you will probably be successful. I you fail to plan for success, you are actually planning for failure. Organize your personal schedule NOW to have time to be successful in this course.

Do you see in the schedule that there are lab activities? Botany is a science where we not only learn about plants, but we do activities that help to make the things we learn more meaningful. The role of the lab is for you to actually do some of the things in botany that a botanist does. The lab work is very important both to gain skills and to give more meaning to the theory you are learning.
