Personal
I am a proud graduate of Kellogg Community College, and Western Michigan University. I was honored as the Outstanding Graduate for two degree programs at KCC, and received the Craftsman Scholar award as the outstanding Industrial Technical Education graduate at WMU. I was also named Outstanding Occupational Educator of the Year in Michigan by the Michigan Occupational Deans Association in 1995.
I try to consider the environment in all the things I do -- so I ride a bicycle to work whenever the weather permits. Not only is it good for the environment, but it is great for my physical and mental health. It is also a better wake-up than a cup of coffee. It amazes me how much higher my energy level is on the days I bike to work.
When I'm not teaching you will probably find me on some sort of adventure. Pat and I are avid tandem riders, and we travel approximately 4000 miles a year by bicycle. Our bicycle tours have taken us all over the midwest, and we have also toured the Rocky Mountains, Nova Scotia, and Quebec by bicycle. I am also a former officer of the Battle Creek Bicycle Club. If we are not out on the tandem you might find us mountain biking out at Fort Custer State Park. We also travel by motorcycle and traveled out to Seattle and back through the Canadian Rockies in 2008. In the winter we cross country ski and spin indoors on the tandem. Our latest pursuit is hiking, and 2009 found us hiking in Yosemite NP (CA), Sedona AZ, Grand Canyon NP (AZ), and Arches NP (UT). In 2010 we hiked in the Great Smoky Mountain NP, and the Porcupine Mountains in the upper peninsula. In 2011 we hiked backcountry into the Grand Canyon for four days, and also hiked in Zion NP, Yosemite NP, Las Vegas, Tahoe, and Sedona.
I love to read and listen to music. My reading tastes vary, but I lean towards mysteries and science fiction. My music taste is eclectic to say the least, but I lean towards singer/songwriters. . . . and I try not to play anything in lab that my students might have heard before.
I enjoy photography and am currently searching for inspiration, maybe I need to find a muse.
