METABOLISM

Metabolism refers to the sum total of all the chemical reactions that take place in our body's cells.  Part of metabolism consists of reactions that breakdown "food" molecules releasing and transferring some of  the stored energy to ATP. All of these types of reactions are collectively called catabolism. The other part of metabolism is called anabolism which includes all of the reactions that are involved in synthesis. Synthesis reactions usually require the hydrolysis of ATP.
